Dr. Robert Lyles Appointed to the Maryland Health Care Commission
Congratulations to Dr. Robert Lyles, who has been appointed by the Governor to serve on
the Maryland Health Care Commission (MHCC).
The MHCC is an independent regulatory agency whose mission is to plan for health system
needs, promote informed decision-making, increase accountability, and improve access in a
rapidly changing health care environment by providing timely and accurate information on
availability, cost, and quality of services to policy makers, purchasers, providers and the public.
The Commission's vision for Maryland is to ensure that informed consumers hold the health care
system accountable and have access to affordable and appropriate health care services through
programs that serve as models for the nation. Commissioner's serve a term of 4 years.
The Economic Hospital Based Medicine & Annaul ASA President's Dinner
The MSA and District of Columbia Society of Anesthesiologists are pleased to announce
that the ASA President's Dinner will be held on Sunday, May 3, 2009 from 3:00pm to 8:00pm
in the President's Conference Room West (1st floor) of the Miller Senate Office Building in Annapolis, Maryland.
You and a guest are cordially invited to join us for an in-depth examination and discussion of health care payment
reform. As well, this is a wonderful opportunity for you to meet and interact with the ASA President-Elect, Alexander A. Hannenberg,
M.D.
The program begins at 3:30pm with a presentation by Robert Berenson of the Urban Institute followed by cocktails, during
which time the exhibit booths will be open. The President's Dinner will begin at 5:30pm and the evening's speaker will be
ASA President-Elect, Dr. Alexander Hannenberg.
All members of of the MSA and DSCA are welcome to attend. There is no fee for members in good standing.
Suggested attire is business casual.
Speaker: Dr. Robert Berenson of the Urban Institute
Robert Berenson, M.D., is a Senior Fellow at the Urban Institute. He is an expert in health care policy,
particularly Medicare, with experience practicing medicine, serving in senior positions in two Administrations,
and helping organize and manage a successful preferred provider organization. From 1998-2000, he was in charge of
Medicare payment policy and private health plan contracting in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Previously, he served as an Assistant Director of the Carter Domestic Policy Staff and recently was a member of the
Obama transition team. Dr. Berenson is a board-certified internist who practiced for twenty years, the last twelve
in a Washington, D.C. group practice, and is Fellow of the American College of Physicians. He was co-author, with
Walter Zelman, of The Managed Care Blues & How to Cure Them, and, with Rick Mayes, Medicare Payment Policy and the
Shaping of U.S. Health Care. He is a graduate of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and on the faculty at the George
Washington University Schools of Medicine and Public Health and the Fuqua School of Business at Duke.

Physician Peer Review
Beginning in 2009 the MSA will be providing
peer review services for the Maryland State Board of Physicians. The
MSA has a peer review committee co-chaired by Dr. Alexis Carras and Dr.
Terry Walman, together they will be coordinating the peer review
process. Stay tuned for more information in upcoming news bulletins.

Registration Now Open for 2009 ASA
Legislative Conference
The American Society of Anesthesiologists is
pleased to announce its annual conference on legislative and regulatory
issues. The 2009 ASA Legislative Conference – ASA’s
premier grassroots
advocacy meeting - will be held Monday through Wednesday, May
4-6, 2009 at
the JW Marriott Hotel in Washington, D.C. Component Society officers,
Legislative Chairs, leaders in academic medicine, “ASA Key Contacts”
and residents are strongly encouraged to register and attend.
Attendees of the Conference can expect to
hear from a range of outstanding speakers discussing key issues
impacting anesthesiology. Invited speakers typically include key health
care policymakers and political leaders from the U.S. Senate, U.S.
House of Representatives, Administration and outside of the U.S.
government. Past conferences have featured the Secretary of the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services, the Honorable Michael Leavitt;
U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY); the Chairman of the House Ways and
Means Committee, Congressman William Thomas (R-CA); and senior
officials from the White House.
Attendees will also hear policy briefings
from members of the ASA lobbying staff and physician leadership. These
briefings will prepare attendees for an important part of the
Conference, Wednesday's “Hill Day” during which attendees conduct
lobbying visits with their
individual Member of Congress and Senators on key issues impacting
anesthesiology.
All conference attendees must
register
through their state Component Societies. No individual
registration
will be accepted through the National Society. Registration closes
April 15, 2009.
