Presenter Bios

 

Robert Berenson – Urban Institute

Robert Berenson, M.D., is a Senior Fellow at the Urban Institute. He is an expert in health care policy, particularly Medicare, with experience practicing medicine, serving in senior positions in two Administrations, and helping organize and manage a successful preferred provider organization. From 1998-2000, he was in charge of Medicare payment policy and private health plan contracting in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Previously, he served as an Assistant Director of the Carter Domestic Policy Staff and recently was a member of the Obama transition team. Dr. Berenson is a board-certified internist who practiced for twenty years, the last twelve in a Washington, D.C. group practice, and is Fellow of the American College of Physicians. He was co-author, with Walter Zelman, of The Managed Care Blues & How to Cure Them, and, with Rick Mayes, Medicare Payment Policy and the Shaping of U.S. Health Care. He is a graduate of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and on the faculty at the George Washington University Schools of Medicine and Public Health and the Fuqua School of Business at Duke.

 

Alex Hannenberg M.D. – President-Elect, American Society of Anesthesiologists

Dr. Alexander Hannenberg serves as President-Elect of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and a member of ASA’s Executive Committee. He previously served four years as ASA’s Vice President for Professional Affairs, with oversight of twelve ASA committees working in the areas of professional standards and professional practice and including economics, government affairs, practice management, patient safety and professional liability. He has been responsible for coordinating development of anesthesiology’s “pay for performance” agenda and has represented ASA at the Surgical Quality Alliance, AMA Physician Consortium and elsewhere. He has been responsible for the planning and development of the Anesthesia Quality Institute, an entity formed to operate a national clinical registry in anesthesia. He had previously served as Chair of the ASA Committee on Economics and a member of the Board of Directors representing Massachusetts. He served for seven years as ASA’s representative to the RBRVS Update Committee and has worked extensively on physician payment policy. He currently serves on the Boards of Directors of both the Foundation for Anesthesia Research & Education and the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation.  He is a past President of the Massachusetts Society of Anesthesiologists and practices at Newton Wellesley Hospital, in suburban Boston.
